The science and platform

What is the KITAIbodies® platform?

KITAI bodies® is Mesenkia’s proprietary biologics platform, built around single-domain antibodies. From one antibody scaffold it can create many therapeutic formats, including mAbs, bispecifics, ADCs, fusion proteins and blood-brain barrier-enabled therapeutics, across multiple indications.

What are single-domain antibodies, and why do they matter?

Single-domain antibodies are much smaller and more stable than conventional antibodies. Their small size lets them travel deeper into solid tumors and reach the cells that drive relapse, while their stability makes them ideal building blocks for advanced therapeutic formats.

What is HVEM and why does Mesenkia target it?

HVEM (TNFRSF14) is a receptor overexpressed on glioblastoma cells. It promotes tumor growth and helps the tumor evade the immune system. Mesenkia’s KITAI bodies® are designed to block both of these mechanisms at the same time.

What does "BBB-enabled" mean?

The blood-brain barrier is a protective layer that stops most therapies from reaching the brain. BBB-enabled means our therapeutics are engineered for active transport across this barrier into brain tissue, which is essential for treating tumors like glioblastoma.

Why are the antibodies produced in alpacas?

Alpacas and other camelids naturally produce single-domain antibodies that are more robust and stable than those from other sources. This gives Mesenkia a durable starting point for engineering first-in-class therapeutics.

Glioblastoma and treatment

What is glioblastoma?

Glioblastoma is the most common and most aggressive primary brain tumor in adults. Even with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, the tumor almost always returns, which is why new treatments are urgently needed.

How is glioblastoma treated today?

Standard care combines surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, typically with temozolomide. These approaches can slow the disease but rarely remove the cancer stem cells that drive relapse, and treatment has changed little in roughly two decades.

Why is glioblastoma so difficult to treat?

Two challenges stand out: most therapies cannot cross the blood-brain barrier to reach the tumor, and the cancer stem cells that drive relapse sit deep within dense tumor tissue. Mesenkia’s approach is designed to address both.

How is Mesenkia's approach different?

Mesenkia uses small, stable single-domain antibodies that penetrate deeper into tumors and are actively transported across the blood-brain barrier, while blocking the HVEM signaling that fuels glioblastoma. It is a fundamentally different strategy from current standard care.

Does Mesenkia only focus on glioblastoma?

No. Glioblastoma is the lead indication because the need is so urgent, but the modular platform can extend to other CNS cancers and solid tumors over time.

The company, investors and partners

What stage is Mesenkia at?

Mesenkia is a preclinical biotech company based in Uppsala, Sweden, with a First-in-Human study targeted for 2028. Its science is validated in preclinical research and protected by a growing patent portfolio.

Who founded Mesenkia?

Mesenkia was founded by internationally recognised scientists from Uppsala University and the University of Tokyo, including researchers who identified HVEM signaling as central to glioblastoma, supported by an experienced leadership team and board.

What makes Mesenkia a compelling investment?

Mesenkia combines a validated scientific foundation, a platform that can generate many programs rather than a single drug, and a first-mover position in delivering biologics across the blood-brain barrier, all addressing a large and underserved market.

How can companies partner with Mesenkia?

Mesenkia works with partners through co-development, blood-brain barrier transport collaborations and platform licensing, with deals that can include upfront payments, milestones and royalties. The Partner with us page has more detail.

Block HVEM signaling

Inside the tumor, KITAIbodies® bind and block HVEM — shutting down the signaling that fuels growth and helps the tumor evade the immune system.

Halt growth and invasion

By disrupting this pathway, the therapy suppresses tumor proliferation and invasion — turning an aggressive disease into a treatable target.
